Globally, forensic scientists utilize Whatman FTA technology to collect, stabilize, transport, and archive their DNA samples. With custom and off-the-shelf products available for blood or buccal cell collection, FTA technology can also be used by law enforcement personnel to quickly and easily collect samples from arrestees and offenders. With the many different applications amenable for use with FTA come the many different sample types that can be applied to FTA.

The method of sample application is dependent on the sample type:
- Saliva and buccal samples – cells are transferred to “indicating” cards with gentle pressure.
- Cell suspensions and other liquid samples – such as blood can be pipetted onto the matrix. Typically between 5-125μL of sample is applied per designated area. Samples should be applied evenly over the defined sample area to avoid overloading the matrix in any one area.
- Solid samples – applying pressure; samples such as meat or tumors are cut to expose a fresh surface and placed directly on the FTA matrix. Pressure is applied to ensure good contact and transfer of cells between the exposed surface and the matrix. Cellular transfer can be checked by removing the tissue to visualize the matrix; if required the sample can be reapplied with increased pressure.
